This week we welcome Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atsuko Kawakita, Director of the Center for German and European Studies at the University of Tokyo. An expert on contemporary German history, she shares her experiences in international research exchanges, emphasizing in particular the importance of long-term and enduring collaborations. Prof. Dr. Kawakita accompanied the 2021 Bundestag election campaign in Germany as a DAAD election observer. A report on her trip can be found here.

October 22, 2021 [by Toru Kumagai] Munich, the capital of the southern German state of Bavaria (Bayern), has become home to a cluster of information technology (IT) companies. US-American high-tech companies like Apple, Google, and IBM have established bases of operation here, and are working to expand them. They have been doing so because Bavaria is home to numerous manufacturing and IT companies, and has a rich “knowledge infrastructure” thanks to the presence of numerous universities and research institutions.

We interviewed Saeka Uchino, who took first place in the event. Uchino, who is in the doctoral program at Tohoku University, gave a presentation titled, “Falling the Wall of Milk Science and Immunology.”

This week we welcome Dr. Nora Kottmann, Principal Researcher at the German Institute of Japanese Studies (DIJ) and head of the research group “Methods and Methodologies”. Dr. Kottmann’s research mainly focuses on issues related to mobility, space, (not) belonging, intimacy and methods in social science research.

The Falling Walls Lab Sendai 2021 (FWL Sendai 2021), hosted by Tohoku University and co-hosted by the DWIH Tokyo, took place on August 31, 2021. We had a special interview with Dr. Jonas Fischer, an organiser from Tohoku University. He won the second prize with the presentation “Breaking the Wall of Energy-Efficient Data Storage” at the same event last year, in 2020. This year, he brought huge success to the event as an organiser. Meanwhile he works as a program coordinator at the Tohoku Forum for Creativity.
