Angewandte Chemie International Edition, the leading journal in chemistry, celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2011. On this occasion, a successful high-level symposium was held in Tokyo on June 20th 2011 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. The event was jointly organized by the journal’s owner society, Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ), the German Research and Innovation Forum Tokyo (DWIH Tokyo), the German Research Foundation (DFG) as associated partner of the Research in Germany initiative (RiG) and the publishers Wiley-VCH.

The symposium celebrated excellence in chemistry and served to strengthening the scientific dialogue and ties in the scientific community. Furthermore, it also appreciated the celebration of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 and the 150th Anniversary of official relations between Japan and Germany. The organizers have lined up an impressive panel of speakers including chemistry Nobel laureates R. Noyori, A. Suzuki, K. B. Sharpless as well as the president of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) H. Schwarz. The program encompassed the full depth and breadth of modern chemistry, from synthesis and catalysis to bio- and nanotechnology as well as health- and energy-related chemistry.

The German Research and Innovation Forum Tokyo organized a joint information booth with Research in Germany (RiG) to inform the attendees about the manifold research and research funding opportunities in Germany, especially in the field of chemistry.
