The European Council and the Japanese government have issued a joint statement reaffirming their “close and comprehensive” partnership in preparation for the 2022 EU-Japan Summit.

One of the key points will be their EU-Japan digital partnership. The goal is to work together on a wide range of digital issues in the upcoming years – this includes for example the “Data Free Flow with Trust” project.

The project focuses on developing secure cross-border data flows in terms of security and privacy. In addition, the EU and Japan aim to secure 5G, “Beyond 5G” / 6G technologies and address the question of safe and ethical applications of artificial intelligence.
