Human-Nature Relationships in the Anthropocene

Explore how humans and nature interact in the Anthropocene from international perspectives. Today, >60% of the world’s population lives in cities. As cities densify and experiences of nature decline, especially among younger generations, understanding pathways to maintain health resilience is a pressing international challenge. This symposium explores human–nature relationships in the Anthropocene, with a focus on urban green spaces – including parks and gardens – and their relevance for global health and sustainability.

Hosted by the University of Tokyo and the TU Munich, the event will bring together Japanese and German researchers across environmental psychology, public health, ecology, sustainability science and education. The symposium will feature lectures, panel discussions, and early-career contributions, followed by a day of guided visits to Tokyo’s green spaces including community gardens. A fourth day will focus on grant and publication development. The event aims to strengthen German–Japanese research exchange, foster new collaborations in global health and environmental sustainability, and initiate joint follow-up activities including publications and proposals.

This is a fantastic chance to meet researchers and practitioners passionate about the environment and science—all happening in person in Tokyo.

This event is organized and hosted by Professor Naomi Shimpo from the The University of Tokyo and Professor Monika Egerer from the Technical University of Munich. It is supported by the DWIH Tokyo.
