The German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ)

The German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) is a German research institute based in Tokyo.

The institute was founded in 1988 and, in 2002, became part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad (DGIA), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The research focuses on modern Japan in a global context. The DIJ decides its research agenda independently with the support of a Scientific Advisory Council.

Since June 2019 Dr. Susanne Brucksch, Senior Researcher at the DIJ Social Science Section, is acting as the head of the DWIH Tokyo Advisory Board.
