Japan and Germany have set themselves the long-term goal of achieving greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. Achieving this goal will require a profound transformation that affects all parts of our economy and society. Industry is responsible for around 30% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, making it a key sector for achieving the neutrality target. Together with advancing digitalization, decarbonization will drive a fundamental transformation of industry at high speed. New and disruptive technologies, products, services, business models, markets and jobs will make the industry greener, more circular, and more competitive. To turn the key challenges of the transition process into opportunities, industry, academia, policy makers and our civil society need to collaborate and find common solutions.

Against this backdrop, the 11th German-Japanese Forum for Environment and Energy Dialogue (EEDF), which will take place online on February 16/17/18, 2021, will focus on the following topics:

  • How can greenhouse gas neutrality be achieved in Japanese and German industry?
  • What are the main challenges, possible solution strategies and technological options for decarbonizing industry?
  • How can policy support the transformation and enable industry to become pioneers in the carbon-free technology markets of the future?
  • What policy frameworks (both market-based and regulatory) are needed to accelerate the market introduction of CO2-neutral energy carriers such as green hydrogen?
