On the road to carbon neutrality in 2045, the structural change in former coal mining regions is a big challenge. The German government has allocated massive incentives to support the development of low-carbon industries such as hydrogen technology, smart grids and clean mobility.

One of these regions is the “Lausitz” (engl. Lusatia) which is located in the States of Brandenburg and Saxony in Eastern Germany. Innovative projects are underway or in the pipeline here in several technology fields:

  • Recycling: e.g. airplane recycling (Airbus group), battery recycling (BASF)
  • Hydrogen: g. the “Hydrogen Lab” (Siemens), hydrogen research center of the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU)
  • Smart Mobility: e.g. CHESCO Center For Hybrid Electric Systems Cottbus (Rolls Royce and others), test center for autonomous driving (DEKRA)
  • Energy: e.g. the reference power plant Lausitz (RefLau)
