[Deadline: 2026/04/16] One of the most popular EU funding programmes for collaboration with Japan is the Staff Exchanges programme of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). Staff involved in research activities (not only researchers!) can spend up to 12 months in independent organisations located in countries associated with Horizon Europe.

Within the framework of this programme, German institutions can host Japanese staff members and send German staff to Japan. This represents a valuable opportunity to develop sustainable cooperation projects between different organisations from both the academic and non-academic sectors based in Europe and beyond.

Please note: Under the MSCA Staff Exchanges programme, applications must be submitted by organisations (e.g. universities, research institutions, or companies). Direct applications from individuals are not possible.

Since 2026, Japan has been an associated third country to the Horizon Europe programme. This provides German universities with expanded opportunities to collaborate with Japanese research institutions, universities, and other organisations within the framework of Horizon Europe projects.
